15 C420 teams and 7 Laser sailors came out
for a day of great heavy air sailing.
Sailing in a strong southwesterly breeze
that started at 17 knots and built to 23
knots, and with large chop and waves built
up by a new moon ebbing tide, the sailors
completed 5 races in each class, over the
course of the day.
In the C420s, the day was convincingly won
by Billy Hluchan and Ryan Shea from Sail
Newport who won 4 of the 5 races to finish
with 6 points. In second place, were Kevin
Martland and Julia Oak, also from Sail
Newport, with 15 points. Right behind them
with 16 points, and claiming the third and
final spot at the Area A Championships were
Conanicut YC’s Natalie Salk and Michael
Brendlinger.
In the Lasers, Matt Gowell ConanicutYC and
Brendan Faria from Ida Lewis YC traded 1st
and 2nd, with winning with 4
points. In third was Nicole Heinl from
Barrington YC with 9 points, securing the 3rd
berth at Area A’s.
Congratulations to all the sailors for
sailing their best in some tough conditions,
and to the qualifiers who go on from here:
GOOD LUCK!!!
Finally: Thank you to Noel Field (Judge),
Chris Reid (Mark Boat) and Kim Hapgood and
Paul Hazlett (Signal Boat) for getting off
the races!
